How to Make Lipstick Last All Day

Lipstick that disappears after your first coffee is frustrating. A few extra seconds of prep and the right order of products make a big difference.

6 steps to long-lasting lipstick

  1. Prep your lips. Smooth away dry flakes and apply a thin lip balm. Blot off any excess before colour so it doesn't slide.
  2. Line first. Lip liner is the biggest secret. Trace your natural lip line to stop colour feathering, then fill in the whole lip lightly so there's colour underneath if the lipstick wears. Try the Rimmel 1000 Kisses Lip Liner, the waterproof NYX Slide On Lip Pencil or the Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner.
  3. Apply lipstick in thin layers. Two thin layers last longer than one thick one. The creamy L'Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick builds up easily.
  4. Blot. Press a tissue between your lips to remove excess, then apply a second layer.
  5. Choose a long-wearing formula for big days. A liquid lipstick such as the Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Bold Liquid Lipstick is designed to last.
  6. Clean up the edges. Run a little concealer around the outside of the lips with a small brush for a crisp line.

Quick tips

  • Match your liner to your lips or your lipstick, not darker, for a natural look.
  • Gloss looks great but wears faster. Add it just to the centre of the lips.
  • Keep your lipstick and liner in your bag for a quick touch-up after eating.
